Many of the pickleball locations in the city offer free open play making it easier than ever to connect with other players, improve your pickleball skills, and participate in pickleball events.
Indoor Courts
Black Mountain Middle School/Multipurpose Center
Black Mountain Multipurpose Center is one of the joint-use facilities in the San Diego area. The center is shared with Black Mountain Middle School and has open play sports times for pickleball, volleyball, badminton, and basketball. The facility is one of the most well-maintained places and is a great spot for casual play, but the limited open play hours each week makes it a not-so-great fit for more competitive players.

Carmel Valley Rec Center
Carmel Valley Rec Center is a community center that’s been open since 1999. The rec center is accompanied by a pool, and the indoor facility has free open play hours for basketball, pickleball, and badminton. This rec center offers a nice indoor location for local pickleball players of all ages to connect with other players and have fun!

Nobel Recreation Center & Athletic Field

The Nobel Recreation Center & Athletic Field was opened in 2007 with an impressive 31 acres. The center offers three indoor pickleball courts and two outdoor courts. You can also find an off-leash dog park, children’s play areas, a comfort station, softball fields, soccer fields, and more. The site is used to display public art and invites the local community to gather to participate in physical activities of all kinds.

Ocean Air Rec Center
Ocean Air Community Park & Rec Center is a large facility with a 16,500 square foot rec center space that includes a kitchen, restrooms, meeting rooms, and a multi-use gymnasium. Outdoors there are play facilities for various age ranges, nature paths, and 18 acres to explore. The indoor pickleball courts are available monthly with rotating open play hours.

Ocean Beach Recreation Center
Ocean Beach Recreation Center is a community center with programs for kids, adults, and seniors. The facility offers a number of programs and leagues to get all ages active and engaged with their community. One of their most popular programs, however, is pickleball! Pickleball open play is always free, with court hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Pacific Beach Rec Center
The Pacific Beach Rec Center offers another indoor place to play pickleball in San Diego, CA. The center has a weight room, a game room, and gymnasiums for indoor sports. Scripps Ranch Recreation Center
Scripps Ranch Recreation Center is an indoor recreation center with a multi-use gymnasium that’s used for basketball and pickleball open play hours. Open play hours are limited during the summer months due to youth summer camps, but indoor courts tend to be more popular during the fall and winter anyways. The facility also includes lighted basketball fields, a multi-use field, meeting rooms, and a kitchen.

Balboa Park Activity Center
This activity center has a multipurpose gymnasium that’s used to accommodate multiple racquet sports, including pickleball. The gymnasium is also used for volleyball, badminton, and table tennis. When it’s set up for pickleball, there are five courts for players to use during free open play hours. It’s free to participate in open play, but there is a fee to join competitive leagues at the activity center.

Outdoor Courts
San Diego Pickleball
San Diego Pickleball is a pickleball club open to the public. There is no open play, but there are 288 time slots per week available for reservation in 2-hour time slots per court across eight courts. The space used is leased from the Pacific Beach Tennis Club, that’s located near Mission Bay Golf Course and Mission Bay High School.
Social and competitive play sessions are welcome! For new players, there is an intro lesson available starting at $25, with paddles and balls provided.

Colina Del Sol Park is a stunning park with basketball courts, an off-leash dog park, and nine tennis courts. The tennis courts have been lined to create eight pickleball courts, but there aren’t nets available at the park. Bring your own net for play sessions and connect with the growing group of pickleball players in San Diego, CA. Courts are well-lit to accommodate early morning and late night pickleball play.

Del Cerro Tennis Club
The Del Cerro Tennis Club in San Diego, CA, is one of the most popular pickleball hubs in the area. Eight outdoor courts are available to rent for 2 or 3 hours at a time with four players per court. There is an additional fee for any extra players or spectators. Advance reservations are required to play. The tennis club also offers pickleball lessons and weekly open play on Mondays.

Coronado High School Pickleball Courts
The Coronado High School Pickleball Courts aren’t technically in San Diego, CA, but they’re close. The courts are located behind the Coronado Fire Station, with open play times on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
There is a drop-in fee to play, but it’s very reasonable compared to other courts that charge a fee. If you’re new to pickleball, there’s a beginners program offered every Saturday from 1:30 to 2:30 PM to review the basics. Paddles are provided for the beginner program.
